Care Group projects

Over the years Tweed Landcare has helped deliver a number of projects for care groups to provide resources like equipment and training.  Supported by grants and community donations, our projects range from bushland restoration to revegetating degraded landscapes. Below is an overview of some of our current and past completed projects.

Tweed Landcare is currently delivering and assisting in managing several projects which help our Care groups tackle restoration activities that are beyond their day to day capacity.

Project:            Burringbar Creek Riparian Restoration Project

Status:             Active

Investor:          OzFish Unlimited

Locality:          Burringbar

Goals:              Conservation and Landscape connection and Volunteering

Funds:            $5,000

Partner(s):          Burringbar Community Landcare, Tweed Shire Council

Tweed Landcare and OzFish Unlimited have worked together on small projects at Care group sites for several years, achieving a range of positive outcomes for the Tweed waterways, for fish, fishers and the broader environment. This time we are teaming up to build on existing riparian restoration work being undertaken by Burringbar Community Landcare. The creek is important habitat for Australian Bass and turtles, with both being sighted during our site inspection. Environmental weed control and planting of local native riparian trees, shrubs and ground covers will help to improve their habitat.

Project:            Bilambil Landcare catchment restoration- the next steps

Status:              Active

Investor:          North Coast Regional Landcare through Caring for Catchments Program

Locality:          Bilambil

Goals:              Conservation and Landscape connection and Volunteering

Funds:            $124,807

Partner(s):       BilambilLandcare, Tweed Shire Council

Since 1984 Bilambil Landcare volunteers have been working to restore approximately 15 hectares of creek, gullies and hillsides. During this time they have planted approximately 37,000 trees and controlled a significant number of Camphor Laurels and other environmental weeds.

The site contains 7 ROTAP listed tree species, species such as Small-flowered Laceflower (Archidendron muellerianum). This area, which has been gradually restored over the last 40 years, is now priceless habitat.

This project would complete and support this enormous effort. Proposal is complete the final hectare of planting, infill plant where required and undertake best-practice weed control across the entire site.

These activities will deliver on environmental restoration activities that will improve catchment health, increase native vegetation cover and reduce weed threats. These activities will slow the delivery of rainfall to creeks, improve riparian vegetation and reinforce creeks banks and gullies  against erosion.  The overall impact will be increased resilience and helping to mitigate the impacts of flooding rains.

As the project is on an active Care groups site there will be excellent opportunities for community education, training and capacity building, including community planting days and efforts to recruit more regular volunteers.

Project:            Working with Friends to restore the Oxley River at McKenzies Bridge

Status:              Active

Investor:          North Coast Regional Landcare through Caring for Catchments Program

Locality:          Eungella

Goals:              Conservation and Landscape connection and Volunteering

Funds:            $25,000

Partner(s):       Friends of Travis on the Oxley, Tweed Shire Council

Friends of Travis On the Oxley have been managing and restoring a site on the banks of the Oxley River since 2017. Prior to the group commencing the work most of the 400m long site was covered with highly invasive weeds such as moonflower, castor oil plant, madeira vine and taro. The site is prone to powerful flooding events that have cut away the banks, removed native vegetation and reduced aquatic and aesthetic values.

Previous works prove that with careful species selection, assistance from professional bush regenerators and regular maintenance the site can be restored to provide native habitat and withstand  flooding.

This project will help their small group of volunteers complete the final 150 m  of weed control and tree planting along a very steep section of bank and undertake follow up weed control and infill planting across the entire site.  Bank stabilisation, control of invasive weeds and the creation of shade and habitat in the riparian zone will benefit the immediate site and areas downstream.

Project:            Friends improving koala habitat and connectivity on the Tweed Coast- Stage 2

Status:              Active

Investor:          NSW Environmental Trust

Locality:          Bogangar and Pottsville (Koala Beach)

Goals:              Conservation and Landscape connection and Volunteering

Funds:            $115,000

Partner(s):        Friends of Cudgen Nature Reserve, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Tweed Shire Council

Tweed Landcare is assisting Friends of Cudgen Nature Reserve (FCNR) to continue conservation and community engagement gains made under their “Friends improving koala habitat and connectivity on the Tweed Coast” project. This project will extend koala habitat restoration to three new sites in Cudgen Nature Reserve and Tweed Council’s bushland estate. FCNR will continue to strengthen partnerships with National Parks and Wildlife Service, council, Friends of Koala, Tweed Landcare and community, and work to create new habitat and restore degraded habitat for the endangered Tweed Coast koala population. Existing and new work areas will be combined in a habitat restoration plan to guide restoration. Friends will provide opportunities for members and community to participate in conservation and experience Cudgen Nature Reserve through educational activities, whilst further promoting values of the reserve.

We are always looking to build new projects – please get in touch with us to find out more!
