Sustainable Farming

Tweed Landcare promotes sustainable farming through regenerative agriculture projects, on-farm support, and education. We have helped farmers implement practices that improve soil health, increase biodiversity, and build resilience to climate change.

We work in partnership with Tweed Shire Council and other groups to leverage funding and implement projects that align with the Tweed Sustainable Agriculture Strategy. Key Initiatives

• On-Farm Support and Training: We have offered workshops, field days, and personalised advice to local landholders. Workshops can cover a range of topics including weed and pest management, soil erosion control, water quality, and the use of cover crops and compost to enhance soil health.
• Biodiversity Enhancement: Tweed Landcare connects agricultural productivity with environmental health. We can assist farmers in restoring habitats on their properties, such as by planting native species along riparian zones to reduce erosion and create wildlife corridors. This work helps farmers improve the natural resource base of their land.
• Soil Carbon Farming: Tweed Landcare has secured grants to trial and demonstrate the benefits of regenerative grazing management. For example, a project involving a “Soilkee Renovator” aimed to show farmers how they can convert tired pastures into nutrient-rich, carbon-sequestering soils. This approach improves productivity and provides economic benefits through potential carbon credits.
