Bush Skills

Bush Skills was a bush regeneration training program that Tweed Landcare offered to landholders between 2019 and 2020. The program was funded by the NSW Environmental Trust Environmental Education Grant.

The program aimed to upskill landholders with high conservation bushland in the Tweed Shire in bush regeneration techniques to give them the skills, knowledge and confidence to undertake bush regeneration on their own property. The emphasis of the course was on landholder engagement, training and support. Landholders were selected due to the high conservation values of their properties, but also because they had minimal bush regeneration skills.

This pilot program addressed identified barriers to effective management by providing skills, plans and information to assist landholders. The program provided training to landholders with good bushland in bush regeneration principles and techniques. The course ran from March 2019 to July 2020. It encompassed a training component and landholder onground work which continued until July 2020. Fifteen landholders were selected and placed into three groups.

A trainer was assigned to each group and helped to develop a poster plan with landholders for each site. A 1ha area on each property was selected to work on as part of the program and  training occurred over 5 x 4-hour sessions (one session at each property).

A training program and resource library were developed and implemented, along with monitoring and evaluation of

trainees’ progress and achievements to ensure the ongoing improved management of bushland. As a result of the project resources were developed, which included a number of bush regeneration training videos which are uploaded under our Bush Regeneration Resources section of our website.
