In late February 2022, a catastrophic rainfall event struck the Northern Rivers region, delivering over 800mm of rain in just seven hours. This deluge followed several months of persistent rain, the consequences were devastating: multiple landslips occurred across 100’s of the properties. In the subsequent years Tweed Landcare supported or delivered four landslip recovery projects in conjunction with our partners listed above.

The Landslip Recovery Project was a regionally coordinated response by the Border Ranges Richmond Valley Landcare Network and Richmond Landcare and supported by Tweed Landcare, Brunswick Valley Landcare. Funded through North Coast Local Land Services, the project provided tailored remediation plans for high-priority conservation lands affected by landslips.

This included targeted weed management, the hand planting of over 2,900 native trees, and drone seeding of inaccessible areas. The landholder’s extraordinary dedication, involving countless hours of maintenance and follow-up weed control, has been central to the success of the project.

One of the largest in the region—an 18,000m2 scar running 1,000 meters in length, carved through native vegetation and engulfed Doon Doon Creek. Today, natural regeneration is thriving, with native species reclaiming the landslip zone and contributing to long-term landscape stability. The project highlights the importance of perseverance, community collaboration, and strategic planning in landscape-scale restoration.
