Coastal and Hinterland Care Group Bus Tours

Coast and Hinterland Bus Trip

Status: Completed
Locality: Various sites across the Tweed
Goals: Community, Conservation and Landscape connection

Tweed Landcare held two bus tour trips in 2024 for the public to visit Landcare, Coastcare and Dunecare groups. On the 13th April 2024, we visited our Hinterland groups where we observed regenerating riparian sites on the south arm of the Tweed through Uki, along Byrrill Creek, through Mebbin forest to Tyalgum and on to Chillingham on the Rous River.

Later in September, we held our Coast and Dunecare Bus trip excursion where we highlighted the great work that our Dunecare groups are doing and the beautiful coast and waterways they help to manage. Eight Care Groups operate along the Tweed Coast. On the 6th September we visited four of them. This included Cabarita Beach, Hastings Point, Pottsville Dunecare and Island Drive Landcare site at Tweed Heads. All the coastal vegetation was eliminated by Sand Mining on much of the coast until the 1970s, then the vigorous weed, Bitou Bush was planted and flourished. Since then, these works have been working tirelessly to rehabilitate the coastline.

Short interpretive walks on the tour were spent observing several Landcare sites where we explored groups’ achievements & challenges, and morning tea was shared.

With assistance from the NSW Government and the Tweed Shire Council, the wonderful community members of these Care Groups have shown us what can be done to repair our planet.
