We are working to help increase the supply of provenanced native seed and plant material to support current and future land restoration programs in the north coast region, working with the North Coast Regional Seed Bank Project.
The North Coast Regional Seed Bank Project is developing a native seedbank for the North Coast Region, hosted at the Coffs Harbour Regional Botanic Gardens. This project consists of central seed storage at the Botanic Garden in Coffs Harbour, and seed collection hubs across the region.
The aim of the project is:
- To improve the availability of native plant seed for revegetation, carbon sequestration and habitat restoration projects.
- To enhance the genetic diversity of supplied seed to grow healthy plants for revegetation projects through implementing best practices in seed collecting and testing with good record keeping.
- To foster information sharing, training and collaboration in the NSW north coast region to support the supply of native plant seed for the benefit of the community.
The project is working to build the capacity of key community and industry stakeholders to collect, store, exchange, and supply native plant seed using recognised best practice methods. We run regular seed collection and processing days which we invite the community to join.
We're working to build the capacity of the restoration community across the Tweed, Byron and Ballina shires to collect, store and supply native plant seed to the North Coast Regional Seedbank in Coffs Harbour

The North Coast Regional Seed Bank is not a commercial seed bank and does not sell seed.
Why get involved?
By participating in this project, you can support efforts to increase the supply of native plants essential for biodiversity restoration, revegetation, and carbon sequestration programs across the North Coast Region. This work helps repair ecosystems damaged by fire and flood while enhancing our region’s capacity to adapt to climate change and improving biodiversity.
Roles to play
We have a long list of native species that need to be found, collected and processed. We need all the eyes and hands we can get, including:
Seed watchers – TO IDENTIFY SEED READY TO HARVEST
Seed collectors – TO HARVEST SEED
Seed processors – TO PROCESS COLLECTED SEED
You don’t need to be experienced.
Training and mentors are available.
