On the 13 July 2025, Tweed Landcare, together with Caldera Environment Centre, held Murwillumbah’s World Environment Day Festival for 2025 at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds. This year’s festival celebrated local action on a broad range of environmental issues, and the global theme for World Environment Day 2025 was #BeatPlasticPollution. The waste-free community-focused event brought together families, environmental advocates, and community members to celebrate, educate, and act on environmental issues.
The festival was MC’d by Community Climate Change Advocate Chels Hood Withey focussed on protecting the Northern Rivers’ unique biodiversity and promoting practical solutions to climate and conservation challenges facing the region. The day featured a lineup of expert speakers who addressed critical challenges, including climate adaptation (Professor Brendan Mackey), plastic pollution (Dr Owen Hogan), the power of bird language (Andrew Turbill, The Bird Guy), and forest conservation (Gerard Wedderburn Bisshop). Numerous local environmental groups, renewable energy providers, and wildlife conservation organisations were on hand, allowing attendees to engage directly with real-world solutions and innovations. Attendees also enjoyed live music from local artists Birren and The Seeding, performances by Ginibi Ballandallah dancers and Hoopla Circus, and dedicated children’s learning spaces. Community raffles successfully raised funds for vital local conservation work by the Murwillumbah Community Garden, Team Koala, and Tweed Landcare.
